14 Tips for Getting More Active

First Rule of Walking: Keep Hydrated

It may still be a bit cold where you are, but as spring arrives, it’s a great time to think about getting outside and being more active.

1. Get some new shoes if you haven’t for a while. Your walking or running shoes may need to be replaced, and this is a perfect time.

2. Take a walk around your house and yard and make a list of things that need to be done. Each item on the list is an opportunity to get more active and get some needed things done.

3. Prepare your flower beds. If that seems like a lot of work, remember that you won’t have to MOW flower beds later.

4. Go for a walk. The weather’s getting nicer, and it’s a perfect time to get outside. Grab your dog if you have one and hit the road.

5. Take a notebook, book or your laptop and walk somewhere different to read, write, work, or just think. Walk downtown and grab a coffee, or head to the park and sit on a bench for a while.

6. Grab a friend and play basketball, tennis, etc.

7. Buy a pedometer and start tracking how much walking you do each day.

8. Spring clean your house (yes, mine needs it too). The housework is great exercise.

9. Clean out the garage. Yeah, it’s a crappy job, but at least it gets you outside.

10. Clean out and wash the cars. We really let our cars go in the winter, unfortunately.

11. Walk or bike instead of drive, if you can.

12. Do something to really get out into nature. Go hiking, boating, etc. and enjoy the spring weather and reawakening of nature around you.

13. Do a photo walk. Grab your camera and walk around town. When you’re on foot, you’ll see plenty of opportunity for pictures, from the neighbor’s daffodils to the trees just budding.

14. Do a spring yard sale. This is a great way to get rid of the clutter and make a little extra cash. Instead of moving the stuff you don’t sell inside, load it up and take it to a charity instead.
