Joining a Gym?

As you all know, exercise is a real struggle for me and my husband. Where we work we have a gym available for our use, for about $500/year for both of us.

I’ve toyed with the idea of joining for some time now. I’m hoping that it’s just the extra push we need to start exercising. I’m hoping two things.

1. That joining (and paying for) a gym membership will help motivate us to exercise.

2. That I’ll enjoy exercise more when there are so many different options available.

I’m curious though, does anyone have any thoughts on it?  Have you joined a gym and had good results, or bad ones?

  1. I highly recommend joining a gym. They aren’t nearly as intimidating as some people seem to think. The majority of people there won’t be concerned with what you’re doing; they’re all trying to get their exercise in and get on with their day, too! :) The range of classes is great. I didn’t start to seriously lose weight until I started taking a few weights classes and combining that with a lot of walking on the treadmill, primarily, and the occasional attempts on the cross-trainer. It’s a great motivating factor, too, because once you’ve dragged yourself there, the whole environment is conducive to actually working out, unlike at home where the computer, the TV and the couch look so much more tempting!

  2. I did and paid for it for five years without using it. When I finally got myself on track, I used it 2-3 days a week along with eating healthier. And, loved it. I used the recumbent bike and the treadmill, and took water aerobics. I had to cancel due to financial problems.
